Does it matter in which wave I register?
Yes, the waves are designed to start runners of similar paces and similar goals. The qualifying waves - Expert, Unstoppable and Winning…at 40+, are for runners looking to race a competitive mile and compete for cash prizes. Recreational waves - It’s All Business, Giving Back and One for Fun, are for participants running for fun, with their corporate team or for a charity.
I want to compete in the competitive waves, but I do not have 1-mile race results to qualify. Can I still compete?
Yes, we can accept any race results that show a sub-6 minute-per-mile finish time for the Unstoppable wave or sub-8 minute-per-mile finish time for the Winning…at 40+ wave. We suggest using the Running Times converter to check your time. If you qualify for these competitive waves, please register online and provide the web address or link to your race results. If you register through a paper registration form, please email kpavlich@pittsburghmarathon.com a link or the web address to your race results.
I am over 40, but can run a sub-6 minute-per-mile. Can I compete in the Unstoppable wave?
No, the Unstoppable wave is for competitors from ages 13-39 years old. Those over 40 must compete in the Winning…at 40+ heat in order to win prize money.
How do I register for the It’s All Business wave?
The team captain creates the team and pays the $40 registration fee to create the team. Most people either collect money from their teammates or their corporation to reimburse them for the fee. The captain will need to give the team name and password to team members so they can register themselves on the team. Please note that if you will be running on the team, you must also register as a team member too. Once the team is created, the team members go online and register themselves on the team and pay the individual $25 registration fee.
How do awards work in the It’s All Business wave?
Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female participants in the heat and trophies will be given to the top three fastest corporations in the heat. The fastest corporations will be determined using a cross-country style scoring system. The top five runners from each team are awarded points based on their overall finishing positions: the winner of the race is awarded one (1) point; second place is awarded two (2) points; and so on.
For example: A team’s score is the total of the points earned by its first five finishers. The team with the lowest score wins.
Team A’s top five runners finish 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 11th. Team A’s score = 1+3+6+9+11 = 30.
Team B’s top five runners finish 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th. Team B’s score = 2+4+5+7+8 = 26.
Even though, Team A took two out of the top three places, Team B wins 26-30.
